Touring The Alpujarra by car
If you like driving and enjoying different views, scenes and countryside each day then Cortijo Los Nogales is an ideal holiday cottage accommodation centre for the Alpujarra and indeed for the province of Granada, Andalucia.
Within an easy car ride, you may range from mountain to beach, from village to town to city, from isolation and tranquillity to the bustle of local markets.

A 40 min drive takes you to:
- The picturesque mountain villages of the 'High Alpujarra' - Capileira, Bubión and Pampaneira
- The town of Orgiva, the market centre of the western Alpujarra.
- A little further on via Pitres, Pórtugos and Busquitar is Trevellez - Spain's highest village and renowned for its ‘snow-cured’ jamon.
- Yegen as immortalised in Gerald Brenan ‘South from Granada’, is towards the furthest eastern end of the Alpujarra

The Buddhist retreat of O Sel Ling is very close to your holiday cottages – 20 minutes drive. In fact we are closer than any of the villages or towns nearby. The name given the centre by the Dalai Lama in 1902 means “Place of Clear Light” and is an interesting place to visit with fantastic views. Steeped in contemplative history the centre is visited by people from all over the world.
Within a ninety-minute drive, you can reach:
- The coast of The Costa Tropica with its beaches and thereon
- The busy town of Motril with large supermarkets and a good range other shops. Its old quarter is typical is an example of Hispano-Arab planning
- The picturesque town of Salobrena, with its beach restaurants and Phoenician castle
- A little further west is Almuñecar with its Saturday market and Arab castle.
- The provincial capital city of Granada which is over 2,000 year old, sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains with:
- The renowned Alhambra and Generalife Palaces
- The Cathedral built between 1518 and 1704
- The Albaicín old quarter
- The gypsy caves of Sacromonte
- Granada is reached from Orgiva via the town of Lanjarón, famous for the curative power of its spa water
