Running in The Alpujarra

A unique feature is the opportunity to pace oneself against a horse - a mini 'Man versus Horse Race'.

The Alpujarra with a Difference - an unusual running experience - is based on a cortijo (farm) in a hidden corner of mainland Spain's highest Mountains. The secluded base is in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and close to the boundary of the National Park.

The picturesque mountain villages of Capileira, Bubion and Pampaneira can be viewed on the other side of the Poqueira valley.

It is a perfect centre for running and high altitude training at over 5,000 feet. Numerous mountain tracks and paths weave their way through a varied and attractive terrain.

Chris and her horse Springsteen competed and came 4th in this race in 1996. The race is held in the Welsh mountains starting in the village of Llanwrtyd Wells.

The late Screaming Lord Sutch presented the prize.

While you are running, you are likely to see some of the abundant bird life, including eagles, hawks and kestrels. In addition, there are many butterflies and over 40 endemic species of flora.
